What made you interested in joining the National Unity Youth Fellowship?
“I’ve often found the challenges facing Malaysia peculiar in comparison to most other nations. We have a population that constitutes three major-ethnic communities and tens of sub-ethnic communities. Given this diversity, Malaysia is a country that is rich in cultural elements. Sadly, this diversity also provides opportunities for those with political agendas to conveniently create divisions- divide and rule. As such, we are faced with a dilemma. Simply put, we are victims of a ‘doubled-edged sword’ scenario. I believe that IDEAS is committed to the idea of national integration and serves as the best platform for young minds to critically analyze the challenges that we, as a nation, are faced with.”
What do you hope to learn or achieve from your experience with the Fellowship?
“We have a team of 21 fellows with proven credentials and they come from diverse academic, economic and political backgrounds. It's a highly polarized group and this inevitably leads to discussions that generate input from a wide range of perspectives. The program is also planned in a way whereby fellows are required to travel to various states to meet and engage local leaders. I hope this will give us greater insight on the reality on the ground and enable us to tap into the root causes that have been preventing us from realizing the dream of the Tunku.”
